? AN EXCEPTIONAL VALLEY

On holiday at Les Cinq Châteaux campsite in the Dordogne, all roads lead to the must-see sites that make this département such an internationally renowned destination. From prehistoric caves at medieval castles enhanced by a grandiose natural setting, the Valley is bathed by the River Dordogne the lungs of a region with many assets.

For some fifty kilometres, the Vézère valley brings together some of the richest and most famous prehistoric sites, including the famous Lascaux caves which have helped to bring the Périgord region to the attention of the whole world. In total, no fewer than 15 prehistoric sites in the Vézère Valley have been classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites!

To continue our journey back in time, let?s go back to the Middle Ages and move closer to the campsite and the Five Castles ValleyFrom which the campsite takes its name! On either side of the campsite, discover the dazzling fortified castles built during the Hundred Years? War (14th-15th centuries): the imposing Beynac fortified castle, perched at 150 metres and the Castelnaud la Chapelle fortified castle on the opposite bank.

From the campsite, set off to conquer these fortresses along a pleasant shady path that runs alongside the River Dordogne. On your way, admire Fayrac Castle and the castle of Marqueyssac. Alone,  Joséphine Baker's final resting place will not be visible on this section of the trail. 

If you prefer romantic strolls, it's to the Hanging gardens of Marqueyssac (a 20-minute walk from the campsite): set on a rocky spur, this vast 22-hectare park offers more than 6 kilometres of walks dotted with 150 hundred-year-old hand-pruned box trees!

As you will have realised, when you arrive in this valley, just ten kilometres from Sarlat, you find yourself in a totally different place. out of time.

Out of timeis also the promise kept by the mythical medieval city of Sarlat-la-Canéda with its exceptional heritage: cobbled streets, vaulted passageways, the cathedral and 15th and 16th century town houses.

Like its history, the towns and villages of the Périgord have much to share. Built on the banks of the river or clinging to the cliffs, nestling in the plain or majestic in a dominant position, they can be discovered with pride in all their architectural originality. Les Cinq Châteaux campsite is ideally located, giving you the chance to discover 4 villages that have been classified as "the most beautiful villages in France": the bastide of Dommethe Roque Gageac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and Beynacaccessible on foot, by bike or by car for those in a hurry!

And if you're "addicted" to the must-sees, then make the most of your stay at the camping les Cinq Châteaux for a getaway in the Batch ! It will take you just over an hour to drive to the centre of the Earth at Padirac chasm and visit RocamadourThis world-famous medieval city is one of the most visited sites in France, after Mont Saint-Michel and La Rochelle. City of Carcassonne.

? UNSPOILT NATURE

As well as its built heritage, the Valley offers an exceptional natural heritage, ideal for country walks between meadows, forests, caves, cliffs and rivers. Just a stone's throw from the campsite, on the Castelnaud side, the green lane allows you to discover the Céou ValleyThis unspoilt, sparsely populated valley is full of small, secluded swimming spots. And if temperatures rise, you can cool off in the clear, limpid, cool water (12-14 degrees Celsius).

With such a wealth of heritage and natural beauty, outdoor activities are a natural part of the tourist and sporting offer. The geographical location of Les Cinq Châteaux campsite makes it an ideal base for hiking, cycling and horse-riding.

To discover the Dordogne ValleyThere's nothing more unusual than a canoe trip on the River Dordogne. A must-do activity for families or friends (from 5 years upwards), it's a fun way to combine leisure activities with heritage discovery. Completely self-sufficient and at your own pace, you can contemplate the magnificent landscapes of the valley, a different view of this architectural wealth, punctuated by swimming stops to amuse young and old alike!

There's no need to plan your descent - we'll take care of everything! As soon as you arrive and depending on the weather, we'll work together to define your itinerary and your choice of craft (canoe or kayak).

Our partner River Canoe will pick you up at the campsite on the agreed day. After a guaranteed day out, your return to the campsite will also be taken care of by the same service provider. It's up to you to decide the present moment so you can leave your car at the campsite!

Ballooning in the Five Castles Valley

If there's one part of France that's a great place to discover hot-air ballooning, this is it! For all its colours and architectural treasures.

Our campers regularly watch the majestic ballet of hot-air balloons overhead. Every morning we wake up to a unique treat: a descent along the water's edge. camping les Cinq Châteaux? A feast for the eyes!
